Job Title: Technical Leader IV - Advanced Manufacturing and Materials Location: Charlotte, NC, Remote/Home Based Job Summary and Description: The Technical Leader IV – Advanced Manufacturing and Materials will plan, manage, and lead research and development (R&D) projects related to the development, evaluation, and implementation of advanced manufacturing methods and advanced materials in energy applications. This role conducts research in complex; high impact technical fields related to advanced manufacturing and advanced materials for energy applications. Works independently with minimal supervision and regularly demonstrates responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives where relationships between cause and effect are difficult to establish and little or no precedent exists. Creative and imaginative thinking is required to develop new concepts, solve emerging industry challenges, and guide long term research directions. This role will plan, manage, and lead research and development (R&D) projects within the Advanced Nuclear Technology Program, with opportunities to support cross sector initiatives including fusion, thermal fleet, and other power generation technologies. The Technical Leader IV will interface directly with EPRI members, OEMs, national laboratories, and regulatory stakeholders to identify needs, shape research portfolios, and deliver impactful technical products. Responsibilities include: Leads complex R&D projects related to advanced manufacturing, advanced materials, and their qualification and long-term operation for nuclear and other energy applications. Develops and executes research strategies involving additive manufacturing, powder-metallurgy hot isostatic pressing, welding and joining, cladding, repair technologies, high temperature materials, and digital manufacturing/modeling approaches. Applies deep technical expertise to identify emerging industry issues, research gaps, and opportunities for new or expanded R&D initiatives. Provides high level engineering guidance, technical insight, and mentorship to junior staff. Acts as a technical specialist for project tasks, ensuring technical quality, rigor, and alignment with member needs. Regularly communicates complex strategies and results through reports, presentations, workshops, webcasts, and advisory meetings. Organizes and oversees project activities to ensure technical and financial milestones are met. Works closely with EPRI Member Services, sector leadership, and cross functional teams to support member engagement and identify new opportunities. Leads proposal development, promotional work, and multi organization collaborative projects. Represents EPRI in national and international technical networks, including standards committees, research consortia, academia, and industry working groups. Supports development and application of relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASME, ASTM, etc.) for advanced manufacturing and materials technologies. Develops research or opportunities of value to EPRI members that fit EPRI’s mission and capabilities. This will include solving member problems, producing insights and information vital to the members, and delivering information in a manner that members and industry can and will apply. Education: Bachelor’s degree in a technical field required Advanced degree (MS/PhD) preferred Significant relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of an advanced degree Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 10–15+ years of experience in R&D projects, new reactor design, fabrication, and construction, advanced concept development, or equivalent technical experience. Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following: Additive manufacturing (metal AM, qualification, repair/replacement applications) Welding, joining, cladding, and repair technologies High temperature alloys and advanced materials for nuclear or energy systems Digital manufacturing, modeling, or simulation Codes and standards application and development (ASME, ASTM, etc., particularly ASME Section III Division 5) Experience in new plant development, new plant regulatory issues, and related codes and standards is preferred Specific experience with new plant engineering, procurement, and construction activities and issues is preferred. Ability to recognize strategic issues and projects and build collaborative and successfully complete projects. Experience in successful proposal preparation Shows maturity of technical expertise and assumes responsibility for highly specialized technical objectives using creative imaginative solutions. Excellent verbal and written communication skills The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will provide thought leadership on industry needs to define and deliver both tactical and strategic research and development solutions. The candidate will possess the technical depth and breadth required to serve as a subject matter expert in advanced manufacturing and materials, with a strong understanding of the research and development lifecycle. Demonstrated experience in successful technical proposal development and business development activities is essential. Finally, the ideal candidate will work effectively within a highly skilled, multidisciplinary team, contributing to matrixed projects and group interactions, and will be willing to travel approximately 10–20% of the time, including internationally. Works independently on technical activities without direct supervision. The salary range for this position is $170,000 USD to $182,500 USD annually. This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including without limitation applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location. This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s annual incentive program. The amount of incentive varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the plan. This role is eligible to participate in EPRI’s standard employee benefit programs, which currently include the following: medical, dental, vision, 401k, STD/LTD and paid family leave, life and accident insurance, paid time off (flexible vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay).
