Illustrator Character Design
Join a creative project at its inception as a freelance illustrator, contributing to a bilingual children’s snail mail subscription based in Madrid. Each month, subscribers receive a postcard featuring three anthropomorphic meerkat characters on global adventures, blending illustrated figures with photographic backgrounds. The role centers on developing expressive, memorable characters from scratch, ensuring illustrations are optimized for seamless compositing—requiring clean lines, precise edges, and minimal texture bleed. The visual style should balance vivid personality with integration into cinematic, well-lit photographic scenes. The initial focus is on character development and establishing a distinctive visual identity, followed by ongoing monthly work creating two character illustrations per month. - Develop three original anthropomorphic meerkat characters for a children’s postcard series
- Create illustrations with clean, well‑defined edges and precise linework for compositing onto photographic backgrounds
- Ensure characters are expressive, with detailed facial features, fur, and clothing
- Produce two character illustrations per month, maintaining consistency and quality
- Collaborate closely with the founding team to refine character designs and visual identity
- Deliver artwork ready for integration into cinematic, believable environments
Requirements
- Proven experience in character illustration, ideally for children’s media or publishing
- Strong portfolio demonstrating clean linework, expressive character design, and integration with photographic or mixed media backgrounds
- Ability to create illustrations with minimal texture bleed and well‑defined edges
- Proficiency in digital illustration tools (e.g., Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, or equivalent)
- Excellent communication skills and openness to feedback and collaboration
- Availability for ongoing monthly commissions and interest in a long‑term creative partnership
- Familiarity with cinematic lighting and composition is a plus
- Based in Europe or able to work within European time zones preferred
